What Actually Causes Semi Truck AC FailureMost of the time it comes down to one of two things: a slow leak, or the wrong refrigerant setup for your truck.
Refrigerant Leaks Are the Usual Culprit
Rubber seals and hoses degrade over time. They start leaking slowly, long before you’d notice a sudden failure.
Here’s the part a lot of drivers don’t know: refrigerant carries the oil that lubricates the compressor. Run a system low for too long, and the compressor can seize from lack of lubrication.
What started as a simple leak repair just turned into a full compressor replacement.
R134a vs. R1234yf: Know What Your Truck Takes
Most Class 8 trucks built before 2021 run on R134a refrigerant. That’s what our Fresno shop is equipped to service.
Newer trucks built for R1234yf use a different compressor oil and different recovery equipment entirely.

California’s Heat Rule and a Working AC
California has two separate heat illness prevention standards, and which one applies to your truck depends on whether the AC actually works.
Title 8, Section 3396 is the indoor standard. A truck cab only qualifies as “indoor” under this rule if the air conditioning is effective enough to cool it.
If the AC isn’t doing its job, that cab drops out of the indoor standard and falls under Title 8, Section 3395, the outdoor heat illness standard, instead. The outdoor standard comes with its own requirements: shade, water, cool-down breaks, and closer monitoring once temperatures climb.
So a broken AC isn’t just a comfort problem. It can change which rules apply to that vehicle and what your fleet needs to do to stay compliant.

Why is my truck AC blowing warm air instead of cold?
Almost always a refrigerant leak or a failing compressor.
Low refrigerant means the system can’t pull enough heat out of the cab, and a compressor that’s been starved of refrigerant for a while often fails outright. Electrical issues and a stuck blend door can cause similar symptoms, which is why a real diagnostic matters more than just adding refrigerant and hoping.
Can a refrigerant leak damage my AC compressor?
Yes, and it’s one of the more expensive mistakes to make. Refrigerant carries the oil that lubricates the compressor. Run the system low for too long and the compressor can seize or fail from lack of lubrication, turning a simple leak repair into a full compressor replacement.
Does my truck use R134a or R1234yf refrigerant?
Every Class 8 truck on the road runs R134a, regardless of model year. Heavy trucks haven’t shifted to R1234yf yet. You can confirm this on your truck’s underhood AC label, which lists the exact refrigerant type.
R134a and R1234yf aren’t interchangeable. They use different oils and require different, certified recovery equipment. Fresno services R134a systems. If your label says R1234yf, call ahead and we’ll tell you honestly whether we can help before you make the trip.
Is truck AC repair only a problem in the summer?
Not really, even though Fresno summers are what drive most local walk-in traffic.
Trucks running nationwide routes hit hot weather somewhere year-round, so a compressor or refrigerant leak doesn’t wait for July. The A/C compressor runs when your defroster is on so its possible for you to use you’re A/C all year. If your AC starts acting up in February, it’s still worth getting looked at before your next hot weather run.
Does California's heat illness law require a working truck AC?
Not exactly, but a broken AC does move your truck into a different set of rules.
California’s indoor heat standard (Title 8, Section 3396) only covers cabs with effective AC. Without it, the cab falls under the outdoor heat standard (Title 8, Section 3395) instead, which requires shade, water, and cool-down breaks once it gets hot.

Do you service reefer trailer refrigeration units too?
No, that’s a different kind of AC work entirely. This service covers the tractor cab’s air conditioning and heating system. Reefer trailer refrigeration units are separate equipment serviced by dedicated reefer technicians.
How much does semi truck AC repair cost?
A straightforward refrigerant recharge typically runs around $150.
A compressor or evaporator replacement is a bigger job, generally in the neighborhood of $1,000, though the exact number depends on your truck’s make and model.
